The Grove: A Reading Circle - The Wisdom of Your Body

  • Shelterwood Collective 108 South Jackson Street, Apothecary Seattle, WA, 98104 United States (map)

“We do not think ourselves into new ways of living, we live ourselves into new ways of thinking.”
Hillary L. McBride,

The Grove is a reading circle for creatives and community seekers.

We gather monthly to carve out a cozy space for quiet reading, intentional conversation, and connection.

The Grove is spacious and focused on nourishment. You are welcome to read the book before we meet, but it isn’t necessary at all. Our curator, Kate Creech, will select an excerpt (or a few) and we’ll take time to read quietly on our own, before transitioning into a discussion/learning space. There is ample permission to relax, receive, and surrender the pressure to say something ‘smart’!

Our featured book for April is The Wisdom of Your Body: Finding Healing, Wholeness, and Connection through Embodied Living by psychologist and researcher Hillary McBride, PhD.

Embodiment is the way we are in the world, and our embodiment is heavily influenced by who we have been allowed to be. Which means nearly all of us have a complicated relationship with our bodies.

In The Wisdom of Your Body Hillary delves into connection between disembodiment and colonization, racism, sexism, and patriarchy—destructive systems that rank certain bodies as less valuable, beautiful, or human than others. She also explores the ways embracing our embodiment can liberate us from these systems. Instead of the body being a problem to overcome, our bodies can be the very place where we feel most alive, the seat of our spirituality and our wisdom.

We look forward to being together and discussing this provocative and resourcing book!

Kate Creech

Psychotherapist & Circle Curator

Kate is a therapist and visual artist. She is excited to curate this circle because books offer a space for us to connect and create the space to process (or simply be) with others in the daunting questions we often face as humans/healers/creatives, etc
