Medical Trauma & Advocacy: Process & Skillshare Group

A virtual Process & Skillshare Group facilitated by Holistic Therapist Carissa Singh

As a therapist, survivor, and someone who is surrounded by the stories of others impacted by medical trauma, I am creating a space where we can join in community bi-weekly to share these stories, process in a space of mutual vulnerability, and connect to advocacy and empowerment.

I will facilitate a bi-weekly process space where folks from all walks of life, different diagnoses and experiences can meet to discuss their trials and tribulations (such as medical neglect, dismissiveness, gaslighting, not receiving any or receiving insufficient care, having pain or symptoms minimized, exhaustion, exasperation, burnout and beyond) in the face of our “systems of care.”

Each session will include an ice breaker question, introductions, process space to discuss our stories surrounding the psychological (and embodied) effects of surviving this past and ongoing trauma, and culminate in a space to share skills, resources and resiliencies. It is my hope that folks leave with a sense of greater agency, advocacy and empowerment within these realms.

Logistics

This group will take place every 2nd and 4th Monday from 10:30-12:00PST over Zoom.

This closed group will be capped at 8 members and will run for 12 weeks, to increase group intimacy and cohesion.

We plan to begin in November, but the exact start date will depend on when the group is full.

The cost per session is $25-$55. Consider paying the lower sliding scale rate if you are bipoc, have other systemically under-resourced identities or experience economic hardship/financial instability. Consider paying the full fee if you are white, have other systemically privileged identities, if you have financial stability/can afford your expenses and/or are generally resourced to a comfortable extent.

Group Outline

In our first session we will set expectations with an introduction to the group and co-create group agreements. In this session all members will be invited to share as they feel comfortable about their story and background related to this topic. Subsequent sessions will follow this flow:

  • Beginning — We will open with a relational, warm-up activity

  • Check-In — We will shift into a circle share wherein everyone will have a few moments to check-in

  • Open Share – We will flow into an open facilitated dialogue offering time to share our stories and find resonance in the grief, pain, rage and heartache

  • Skillshare and light coaching – We will close with skillshare portion offering relational and practical support to each other in navigating caring for oneself while getting needs met within these systems

*This flow may shift based on the needs of the group.

Registration

The group is currently open and enrolling but will be capped at 8 participants. Follow the “learn more” button below or email carissa@mosaiccounselingcollective.com to learn more and secure your spot.

(she/her)

I am a queer, cisgender, multiracial woman living with chronic illness. I identify as a healer, a seeker, a weaver, and an activist. I live by principles of authenticity, openness and integrity. I am a person who often finds themself in the in-between spaces, from my multi-racial heritage to my status as chronically ill yet visibly abled, I find myself trying to reconcile my identity in a world that asks for us to settle into the tidy boxes we have been provided. As someone who has often straddled the space between identities and roles, between suffering and healing, I consider how we can create new notions of what it means to feel whole, to flourish, to live generatively, to expand far beyond the limits of a box that was always too small to hold all that we are.
