Developing a Supervisor Identity | Ali Chow

  • Shelterwood Collective 108 South Jackson Street Seattle, WA, 98104 United States (map)

A collaborative space for working supervisors to foster supervisor stewardship.

Many of us have been deeply impacted by the mentorship of a clinical supervisor. For such a significant role within our field, there is a gap in support and understanding of supervisor identity development. Taking the step to become an approved supervisor is a professional milestone. For what’s often joked about as your “last promotion” as a  therapist, the most common response to the approved supervisor training is, “That’s it?!”

Developing a Supervisor Identity seeks to collaborate with working supervisors to foster supervisor stewardship — the idea that you are impacted by the work that you do and the acknowledgment that supervisors experience that in a unique, contextual way.

Together we will engage:

  • The work with yourself — why did you become a supervisor; how do you uniquely show up; what does continued development look like for you?

  • The work with the supervisee — what is it; what does attunement look like in supervision; how do we cultivate therapy skills and presence

  • The work in community with other supervisors — how do we create support through consultation, professional organization, and continued learning as supervisors

This dialogue-oriented workshop will be facilitated by Allison Chow and Nicole Greenwald, both seasoned psychotherapists and approved supervisors with over 10 years of experience and a passion for inspiring and developing clinicians.

This workshop is offered in partnership with Allison Chow’s doctoral internship in supervision. Our conversation will be recorded for qualitative research.
