Melanie Simpson, MA, LMFTA
Individual, Couple, and Family Therapist
New Start Therapy
I work with individuals, couples, teens, and families to help them find “a new start.”
I am a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Associate (LMFTA), and as such I work from a systems approach to therapy. A systemic approach to therapy means that we don’t just examine an individual's functioning, but we also look at the system one finds themselves in, plus how that system impacts the individual. We are all shaped by where we come from and that informs so much of what we do in all of our relationships. LMFTs view individuals and their problems in this larger context, allowing for strengths to emerge and holistic treatment to empower the clients.
I am an existential, humanistic therapist and I often use experiential therapy. Experiential therapy can help process difficult memories and experiences; improve relationships; cope with negative emotions; increase feelings of autonomy; and improve self-esteem. My sessions are person-centered and driven by you and your needs. You are the expert in your own life. I believe you have unique potential and abilities and that you are not solely defined by the problems that you may be struggling with. If at any time there is something you wish to discuss and address in therapy, please bring it to my attention.
I have a Masters of Arts Degree from Pacific Lutheran University in Marriage and Family Therapy and a Bachelors of Arts Degree from Washington State University in Social Sciences, with a concentration in Psychology and Human Development. I have completed The Gottman Trainings, levels 1 & 2 and I am currently working on their “Treating Affairs and Trauma” course. Additionally, I am a member of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy and Washington Association of Marriage and Family Therapy.
